Snow Bunting

Snow Bunting

Snow Buntings are hardy little birds from the Arctic.  The males always show large patches of white in their wings, but young female birds are often much darker and can be harder to identify.  During the summer, males adopt a striking black and white plumage, but these are attractive birds to see at any time of the year.

Where to see Snow Buntings

A small number of Snow Buntings remain in the UK to breed in the Highlands of Scotland, but most birders are familiar with them as winter visitors along our coasts.  Flock sizes have decreased in recent years, but sandy coastlines in Northumberland and North Norfolk are among their favoured locations.  Occasional birds turn up inland during the winter.
